In addition to daylight, churches were
illuminated with icon lamps of thin glass. Such icon lamp got oil poured into
it, then a wick was dipped into the oil and lighted.
Icon lamps were placed into special holders, or polycandelons, hanging on chains.
The vitrine presents glass icon lamps, thirteenth
century bronze openwork polycandelons
with inlets to place icon lamps in them, and bronze bracket for hanging a big
icon lamp, in the form of a beautifully curved bronze rod.
At
the bottom, there is blue glass polycandelon
with wide horizontal rim and six round inlets for icon lamps. There are also
candlesticks for one and candelabrums for several candles.
