Showcase XV

Metalworking was an important industry in Cherson. Iron was used to produce implements, to hammer weapons and armours for warriors, horse trapping, anchors, chains, household goods, locks, and door bolts. Copper was applied to make wire, cooking pans, pitchers, bowls, fishhooks, and decorations. Vessels, candlesticks and candelabra, icon lamp stands called polycandelons, openwork chains, goblets, church utensils, crosses, weights and coins were cast of bronze. They used lead for producing fishing sinkers and goldsmith’s tools, to fasten architectonic members and fix broken vessels, though water pipes were made of sheet lead.

Especial demands were made of lock makers. Craftsman did not have a right to make two similar locks and keys. If he made two locks of the same kind, he was expelled from the city and deprived of the right to practice his craftsmanship for the future.

In the middle of the vitrine, there are various locks and keys that were found during excavations. Their size varies from the big storehouse locks to the tiny ones that were used to fasten jewellery caskets.

To the right there are carpenter's and shipbuilder's tools such as axes, saws, drills, scrapers and other staff.
