Showcase XII

Less expensive fresco painting gradually replaced mosaics of Byzantine churches. Fresco fragment with image of the face of the Mother of God that embellished the altar niche of a small city church gives a brilliant, expressive example of Cherson church painting in the ninth and tenth centuries. The fresco is placed on a tall supporting column to the right.

Outside walls of Cherson's buildings were sometimes decorated with stone slabs. Along the wall, you can see the examples of limestone slabs and inset slabs with relief images of animals and floriate crosses. One stone keeps inscriptions carved into its surface saying: "Christ's light enlightens everyone" and "Run, envy, Christ turns you out".

The vitrine to the left houses fragments of stone architectonic members with carved patterns; at the bottom, you can see the fragments of mosaic floors.
