Showcase XI

Walls of churches in Cherson were decorated with mosaics made of opaque glassy mass called tesserae. Medieval artisans achieved much success in making mosaic; they found the way to make tesserae in a variety of different colours.

Tesserae mosaics covered church vaults, thus giving an opportunity to feel the simultaneous contrast of durability, thickness, and changeability of the "supernatural" and "heavenly" glimmer, because the beauty of tesserae mosaic showed in its best on uneven, bowed surface.

Unfortunately, none of wall mosaics of tesserae remained in Chersonesos until now, but even what you can see in the vitrine - mosaic cubs discovered by excavations and sorted out by tints -  can help us to imagine the magnificence of icons that were made of tesserae!
