Showcase XXVIII

In spite of more than thousand-year-old age, many excavated bone artefacts preserved almost undamaged owing to the good ability of bone to stay intact in Crimean soil. In the middle part of the vitrine, some implements are presented. There are needles, spindle whorls, thimbles, borers and other stuff; to the left of these tools for leather treatment are located.

The population of the city needed leather goods: shoes and hats, mittens and sword belts, straps and saddles, quivers and other stuff. It stimulated the development of the tanning industry.       The tanners used ox, goat and horse skins as a raw material. At first, skins were grained in special vats. Than leather was tanned and softened mechanically by hand or with special bars. The examples of such bars you can see at the upper left part of the vitrine.

Weaving and spinning was also developed in Cherson. Wool was the main raw material for textile manufacturing. Wool was combed with special iron fine long-toothed combs, which are in the upper left part of the vitrine. The invention of horizontal loom increased labour productivity of medieval weavers. In result of that, the costume became more complicated and textiles more variable. Under the combs for wool treatment, you can see weights for straining threads in a loom, thimbles, and other tools.

Another interesting find is iron scissors that you see in right bottom part of the vitrine.

You can take a closer look to the examples of medieval woven, silk and linen textiles in horizontal vitrine no. 41 in the middle of the gallery.
