The history of Chersonesos-Cherson was two thousand
years long, and for one millennium it existed as a Christian city. Churches,
baptisteries, and tombs were constructed for over a thousand years; icons,
crosses and other church utensils have been imported to the city. Cherson was a
centre of Christianity in Taurica, which is why so many Christian antiquities
were found during excavations.
From the beginning of the fourth century
onwards, Christianity was not persecuted in the Roman
Empire anymore. It was announced a "permitted cult" and a little
bit later was proclaimed the state religion. The policy of the Byzantine
emperors included the attempts of Christianizing the north Black Sea area. The
few-century-long process of penetration and establishment of Christianity in
Cherson started in the fourth century. However, some graves of Cherson with a
few artefacts with Christian inscriptions and symbols date back to the late
third century.
It was the last quarter of the fourth century
when Cherson eparchy was founded. This fact is recorded documentary by the
signature of the bishop Aetherius under the acts of the Second Ecumenical council and by the bone pole top
with the inscription "...(so-and-so), Christ's bishop of the city of Chersonesos" discovered at the port area of the city. This
artefact dates back to the late fourth or early fifth century; you can see it in
the left part of a stand.
The existence of churches in the city during the
given period is confirmed by unique marble sculptures from the fourth and fifth
centuries originated from the interiors of the churches and discovered in the
site of Chersonesos. The sculpture of the "Sacrifice of Isaac", which was the
prototype of Christ's sacrifice on the cross, is located below in the vitrine,
on the left, and "A Monster Devouring a Fish" is on the right.
