Showcase XXIX

Craftsmen of medieval Cherson were very skilled in bone- and wood-carving.  Their main attention was paid to beauty of their products. Most popular type of ornamentation was of geometrical patterns like circles, lines, points and crosses.

In the right part of the vitrine, there are bone artefacts: decorative appliqués, plates, and grip fragments.

In the left part of the vitrine you can see burial covering with bone appliqués (original cloth perished and was replaced with modern one), at the bottom to the right a wooden casket decorated with carved bone plates. As wood decayed to ashes in course of the centuries that passed, the restorers replaced it with plastic.

Together with bone artefacts, artistic carving and incrustation decorated wooden products such as doors, furniture, and caskets. Wood does not actually survived in the Crimean soil, because it requires permanent humidity or permanent dryness to outlast many centuries. Therefore, there are only a few wooden artefacts excavated in Cherson. Dark wooden fragments in the middle of this vitrine are the very rare exhibits. There are remains of carved wooden furniture and casket cover incrusted with bronze wire. These artefacts survived owing to the fact that they were charred in fire and were “conserved” in that way.
