Showcase XXV

Similar to other Byzantine cities, mediaeval
Cherson had its lands located in the environs. Many city-dwellers combined
industries with farming in the spots of land located near their houses or
outside their city. They cultivated grapes, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and
industrial crops. They also processed agricultural products to make wine, flour
and to bake bread.
In
the left part of the vitrine, there are agricultural implements used in
tillage, such as iron shares of wooden plough and mattocks, and for harvesting,
like sickles, curved scythes, and winegrower's knife. At the bottom, you can
see miller's tools: stone millstones, mortars, plates with burnt grape seeds,
millet, rye, barley, wheat, beans, and also remains of rye bread charred in
fire.
