Showcase VIII
|
The icons presented in this vitrine were used for
praying at churches as well as at homes. They were made of bronze and steatite,
with the surface brightly painted and gilded.
In the right bottom part of the vitrine, you can
see two matching icons imported from Constantinople in the twelfth century. The
first icon is "Annunciation." "Three Military Saints" are presented on the
other icon: St. Theodore at the left, St. George in the middle, and St. Demetrius at the right. Christ extends crowns of
martyrs above them. The most ancient icon in the museum display is the small
steatite icon of St. Demetrius (or St. George) dated to the eleventh century.
At the
upper left part of the stand, you can see round bronze icon of Christ
Pantocrator (Greek for "almighty"). It was made by local masters in the twelfth
century. The icon was mounted onto wooden background.
At
the bottom of the vitrine, there is a cross in circle, on two steps, with the
inscription "Lord, help your servant George Mamses". This cross dates from the
tenth to the twelfth century.
